Adept database always locked

I am using a system originally Hedgehog upgraded to Dapper.

Adept has worked since the update, but for the last week or two every time I try to use it I get a warning about the database being locked by another program.  I don't see and "apt" processes when I do a ps ax, so I'm either not seeing this other Aptitude/apt-get/adept type program or something else is going on.

Suggestions?
