cpu usage too high, entire system sluggish, top is messed up

I found a bug report that I think is related to my problem.  If anyone else
is experiencing this, I guess all we can do is leave comments on the bug
page and hope a developer notices it.

Btw, I can confirm that the problem does not occur on my desktop, only my
laptop.
