Kate hanging doing spell check

If I do a spell check in Kate or KWrite/KEdit they just hang using 100% 
cpu. I have to do a kill to exit them. It _doesn't_ happen in KWord and 
Quanta (which is based on Kate) is also OK.

This is on Dapper and KDE 3.5.2

Is KDE 3.5.3 stable? Will an upgrade solve the spell check problem?
