Thanks Dana. Same experience with the Ubuntu disks as with the Kubuntu ones.

Install in text mode proceeds flawlessly. The system boot hangs.

Using rescue mode I was able to get this:

no screens found
XIO: Fatal IO error 04
(connection reset by peer)
on X server ":0,0" after 0 requests (0 known processes) with 0 events 
remaining.

You may recall I have added an ATI Radeon 7500 card and that seems to 
not be found.

Advice appreciated.
