can't play avi and music

Hi there,

I have a fresh 6.06 install but when trying to play XVID encoded AVIs or MP3s 
either Amarok or Kaffeine are acting like scanning the files rather than 
'playing' them! I think that's a conf problem but don't know where to look 
for.
