Hi Dave,

You should be able to change you root password by logging in with your
normal user account and running 'sudo passwd' in a terminal (Note that
when sudo prompts for a password it wants your user password, NOT the
root password).

Unfortunately if for some reason you don't have a user account with sudo
access you'll need to boot from a live CD (such as the kubuntu-desktop
install CD) and then mount your hard disk, chroot into it and run
'passwd' from there.
