Possibly because CIFS (SMB) and NFS are fundamentally different and
incompatible protocols. "man smbmount" IIRC will yield plenty about how
to mount a windows (CIFS) file share under Linux.
What error message were you getting. We can't replay errors here ;)

Yes - mount the windows shares somewhere in your Linux file tree and use
them the same way as any other file system.
