freezing screen

Hi,
Does anybody know how to solve this freezing screen bug in Kubuntu
606 LTS? Suddenly the screen freezes and then icons, texts, menus etc
redraw really slowly. .... ctrl + alt + backspace.... I've tried
every solution available at linux forums over the net but none
actually worked.

It's true that changing "vesa" for "ati" in xorg.conf solves the
problem. However, that solutions is unsatisfactory, since the vesa
device performance is not as good as ati (and screen fonts become
larger).

I've already tried the following without success:

1. updated everything, kernel, kde etc (adept)
2. installed ati device from vendor
3. disabled "Load "dri" " in xorg.conf
4. added "noapic noacpi" to boot
5. disabled wireless network
6. re-installed distro 3 times...

 Thanks, Eduardo.
