I sometimes use partimage do to backups of an existing operating system. I
don't know Norton Ghost at all but after what i heard with a norton ghost
image you can install several machines with +/- different hardware
configurations (not sure about this feature)? Partimage does not have this
feater it only creates a *copy* a an existing file system. Its quite fast
and can store the image everywhere.
By the way the partition you'd like to backup needs to be *unmounted*. So
what i do is
Boot from ubuntu live cd
install partimage
launch partimage and backup/restore on/from external hd over usb
