Could you just edit your program with "kate" and use the built-in terminal in
that editor to recompile the code? That's all I usually do if I am
experimenting with toy programs. Lots of editors have shell escapes and
macros so compiling while staying in the editor is a breeze (e.g. emacs or
vi).
