Compiling C in KDE

Kdevelop was the first that I tried. I find that I can never open a
closed project/file and work with it- every time I open Kdevelop I
must create a new project. Also, now when I click New, I specify a
directory and a file name, I choose Blank File (the only option there
is), but I get no editor window. Only a blank grey window.
