how to disable media:/ feature?

I had that exactly problem and solved it right now (in KDE 3.5) by disabling
the media notifier daemon(*). In the Control Center, go to KDE Components ->
Service Manager and, in the lower window, disable the "Media Notifier
Daemon" but *not* the "KDED Media Manager". I suspect that the latter makes
KDE detect media insertion/removal, while the former does all the
interaction with the user.
It works perfectly for me now: when you insert a CD or USB medium, the
unmounted icon pops up and you can mount it just by clicking on it.
