I haven't tried to index myself but by content of the
error message I would check if htdig is installed.

In my breezy it is not installed.

f at morrigan:~/tmp$ dpkg -l htdig
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed
|/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err:
uppercase=bad)
||/ Name                  Version               Description
+++-=====================-=====================-==========================================================
un htdig <none> (no description available)
f at morrigan:~/tmp$ apt-cache search htdig
htdig - WWW search system for an intranet or small internet
htdig-doc - Documentation for the htdig package
apache2-utils - utility programs for webservers

If not try installing it.

Good luck
