Please be gentle with me; I've never done this before...

In an attempt to get google earth to work properly, it looks like I
need to update the nvidia video driver for my e-GeForce 6200 (it's
currently version 1.0-8776, according to the nvidia-settings program).

I have followed the instructions at nvidia.com and downloaded the file:
  NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-9746-pkg2.run

The instructions then say to run "sh
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-9746-pkg2.run". But when I do that, the
installation program complains that I am running an X server.

I tried logging out and running the program from a console session,
but it still made the same complaint.

So how *exactly* do I go about updating the video driver?
