I've found that very few Linux distributions cope with 1280x800 screens. My
laptop is 1280x800 and I usually have to change the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file
file by hand to get this recognised.
You might have to search on the Internet for a relevant modeline to add to the
file, change your horizsync and vertrefresh and add "1280x800" to the display
resolution section. The relevant bits in my Kubuntu xorg.conf file are (for
an E machines M5116 laptop):
in Section "Monitor"
HorizSync 28-64
VertRefresh 43-60
in Section "Screen"
and in SubSection "Display"
Modes "1280x800"
This works for Kubuntu on my laptop. For other distributions I have to add a
Modeline "1280x800" 83.91 1280 1312 16624 1656 800 816 824 841 in
Section "Monitor".
I hope this helps.
