Dapper to Edgy problems

You should be fine if you do this. I was never able to complete an upgrade
from dapper to edgy successfully -- but from a fresh install, edgy has been
fine on the same machines.

I'll defer to others on that one. I always reformat completely when I
install from scratch, so it's not something I've ever tried.
