Configuring mice

Can you tell us which mouse it is? How many buttons?
As I said, having installed Ubuntu on numerous computers, I have yet
to see a mouse failing to work.
What I have seen though, is the xorg.conf file using /dev/mouse
instead of /dev/input/mice after running some configuration tool,
which I had to correct. Does that help in anyway?
