I am a new Kubuntu user, after having used SuSe for 8 years. I did
exactly that yesterday (install the latest OpenOffice 2.1), and it all
went without a hitch.
I used alien to convert the rpm's to deb's and then installed with dpkg.
OO 2.1 is now installed in /opt/openoffice.org2.1.
By the way, I've just installed firefox 2.0 and copied it to
/opt/firefox and it does not freeze anymore when there's java or flash.
Don't really know why by the way.
