sound problems

Sound works fine on my hardware using Mandriva Linux, but not at all on 
Kubuntu based on Ubuntu 6.06: no startup sound, no CDs, Internet radio etc.

I've installed MP3 support. I've checked all the usual things based 
on the Ubuntu support documentation and searches of relevant previous support 
messages. Mute isn't on as far as I can tell. Using the sound and 
multimedia system settings panel, sound is 
enabled but the test button produces no sound. 
On the hardware tab setting on this panel
I've tried ALSA, and autodetect audio devices - still nothing.

What next ?
Any help appreciated.
