What the? Failed to open device X Error....

Apparently there was a bad upgrade for Xserver-Core.  If you apt-get update 
and apt-get upgrade the latest xserver-core will fix the problem.

However, as one news site noticed, the question is how did this crappy patch 
get through the testing?
