What the? Failed to open device X Error....

I am trying to spend some time configuring my printer, and I found that both 
Kcontrol and systemsettings are dying due to this problem:

Failed to open device
X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 166
  Major opcode:  144
  Minor opcode:  3
  Resource id:  0x0
 
repeated at least a dozen times.

Any idea what is going on?
