Kubuntu installation problems

I have tried, several times to install Kubuntu v 6.06 LTS from a live CD, alongside Windows XP in a dual boot setup. Each time the result is the same. When the installation reaches the "searching for mirror" stage, my always on ethernet connected ADSL2 modem shows no activity. Also, the security update connection also fails. When the installation is "complete" it runs and I can connect to the web via Konqueror, but Adept does not connect to the web to Add New Programs. Programs already installed, like Open Office work, but how can I get updates etc? As a complete newcomer to Linux, but not to computing, I need to know what I am doing wrongly. The lack of any "What to do during and after installation" is a great handicap.

Finally, what is the best way to remove a Linux OS from my PC? There must be a better, easier method than my current one which is
1 Use Partition Magic to reformat the partitions used for Linux and Linux Swap
2 Boot the PC with the XP installation CD
3 Select repair and use fixmbr

Can anybody help, please,

Bill
