Spaces (and other characters) in filenames

Most shell interpreters have auto completion of filenames, so in 99% of the 
cases, you only have to press 'tab' to have the special characters 
automatically escaped.

Otherwise, you can have a look at krename. In the "find & Replace" dialog box, 
choose to transform " " to "". BTW, it is an amazing software, in advance 
mode, it has plugins to handle several types of files; to extract data and 
put them in their names (maybe it could even be used to rename MP3s ;-).
