Sometimes there are no solutions.

I had a PII 450MHz once that kept on randomly cycling power only for Red
Hat 4. Didn't have that problem with Windoze 98. Only RH4. It was
annoying too.... I was in the middle of OpenOffice more than once to
find that the power had cycled and all work was lost.

The funny part was that my dad thought I was nuts until he saw the
behavior. He then suddenly remembered that this was the same machine
he got from the boneyard at work. It was vetoed by a coworker because
it would (gasp!) randomly cycle power in the middle of things on RH4.
No idea what could cause such a strange malfunction, we gave the
machine to my mom and loaded Windoze 98 on it. She now refuses to have
her computer upgraded, even though the mouse is almost as old as I am!

Ah.. good times.

As for your problem, to me it sounds like you need to use a linux boot
loader like grub or lilo or whatever they use on macs. I don't think
the mac boot loader is making many friends in the Linux world judging
by that behavior. The only thing I know of would be to re-install
Linux, this time paying special attention to the class of boot loader
installed (or not installed, as your case seems to be).
