Error correction, running rsync as root on coyote, there is now one entry 
in the shop boxes messages log per attempt:

Aug 14 04:10:00 localhost rsyncd[9754]: auth failed on module shop-gene 
from coyote.coyote.den (192.168.71.3): password mismatch

But the password file contains roots password, which is obviously not the 
same as the sudo password.

Thanks for the trigger to make me go checking again, and any further
hints you can offer about the password missmatch problem.
