Restoring applications after reboot

It is because thunderbird doesn't adhere to freedesktop.org's standards, not 
because it isn't a KDE application.  I suggest you file a bug against 
thunderbird, to let the developers know you feel such compatibility is 
important to you.

In the interim, Lothar's suggestion should work OK.
