I did it the other way around: Had ubuntu originally and later installed
kubuntu-desktop on top. Xserver was also badly configured after that,
but I resolved by reconfiguring the xserver again. I seem to remember
that I accomplish this with:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
but I am not 100% sure. YMMV.
