that did the trick. you'll have to forgive me, i've been a redhat user
for nearly 10 years so yum and rpm i know well - apt-get is new to me.
i'll get used to it.

now to try to get the ipod mounted read/write. that's a trick i'll
probably not succeed in doing - probably have to reformat the device. :(
