   The problem is many modems just aren't. They are in fact modified 
soundcards and often almost impossible to get going with linux because the 
so-called drivers that are released with them are doing the job of the 
hardware that is missing from them. If you can, get an external modem or get 
an isa 33K6 that will not be as good as a 56K external but it will be more 
consistent and less subject to noise than the 56K internal winmodem
