Annoying Problems with User Accounts

I'm setting up a laptop for my wife and I to share, and I'm having some
problems getting my wife's account to work properly.  My account is fine;
everything works just dandy. However, I'm encountering the following
problems when trying to set up Jennifer's account:

1. Sound. For some reason, I can't get sound to work at all. The volume
adjust icon in the system tray is disabled.

2. Removable Media. I can mount a USB camera just fine under my account, but
not under my wife's account -- it says that /dev/sda1 was not found
in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab. I really don't understand this one since it
works just fine under my own account.

Now, my account is the one I used to build the machine, but my understanding
is that as long as I'm not using sudo my account is just a normal user
account.  Am I right?

Anyone got any answers for me?
