Amarok

Looks like I was wrong and you were right.  I looked in my debian
installation, and didn't see anything different. Also search around on
the web, and it seems you were right in that amarok doesn't
automatically do transcoding.  I think what happened was that the last
time I was filling my ipod, I hadn't finished ripping everything to
flac, and still had mp3 laying around.  And I had problems with the db
in ipod being corrupted + amarok not complaining about wrong fileformat,
so I probably didn't notice that I couldn't play the files.

I did find a script here,

find interesting (automatic transcoding in amarok)

Haven't tested it yet, though.  Sorry about being wrong
