Does the dialler have a menu option ie is it on the start menu...If it does
right click, add item to desktop. I'm a bit lost with the dialler option as I
use a router and friends that have modem/routers use the ethernet connection
so don't need to dial.

Ok I'm guessing you don't have a sound cable on your cd drive. If using kscd,
you're not clear. But if it is go to extras, configure kscd enable direct
digital playback.

You're not very clear here about what your are trying to do. I gave up with
trying to install the realplayer deb and installed the rpm with alien.
Download the rpm from the realplayer site. Install alien with sudo apt-get
install alien. Then install the rpm with sudo alien -i name of package. Note
this will install into /usr/local/RealPlayer or similar. You need to make a
symbolic link somewhere like /usrbin. To do this cd /usr/bin then sudo
ln -s /usr/local/RealPlayer/real remember tab is your friend in a terminal,
you don't have to type everything hitting tab will autocompleter

Not sure what's happening here someone more knowledgeable than I may be of
more help.

At the x level yes but the gui's are different and do perform differently. So
the answer is sometimes yes sometimes no.

Again something I'm not familiar with or ever had happen so am at a loss.
You could try installing yakuake and see if it works better, you will need
the multiverse and universe repositories to do this.
