5.10 gcc nuttiness

I decided to try Kubuntu 5.10 on my laptop, which is
pretty Linux unfriendly. The installation went pretty
smoothly, but when went to build a library from
source, I noticed there's no gcc. So I sent into the
package manager, picked gcc (which chose gcc 4.0.2),
installed it, and when I did "./configure", I got this
error:
"error: C compiler cannot create executables".
I previosly tried Ubuntu 5.10 on this same machine,
and after it had supposedly installed gcc, it was no
where to be found. Trying to install earlier versions
(3.3, 3.4) were fruitless. I'm pretty amazed that gcc
won't work out of the box; what's the point of open
source if you don't have a compiler?
Any suggestions before I try installing Gentoo on this machine?
