You *are* barking up the right tree.  It is not started by default (or
at least that has been my experience; you can set it up to start with
KDE which is what I have done.), that is why alt-space didn't do anything.

When you entered 'katapult' in a term you WERE starting it (thus all the
messages).  If you would have typed 'katapult &' it would have started
it in the background and given you the term back (you could also hit
alt-f2 and type 'katapult').  Best to just auto-start it at login.
