Xserver dead after upgrade

Hello. I had two (K)ubuntu Hoary boxes, one for
testing and my main system. I downloaded the Kubuntu
iso, added it to sources.list in my testbox and
upgraded through synaptic. It downloaded the Ubuntu
(Gnome) packages which weren't on the cd and it worked
like a charm. However, on the other computer, the
upgrade was interrupted twice, once claiming some
dependency problem about linphone and the other about
wxpython and python-wxsomething trying to replace each
other's files. I never managed to fix this, so I
rebooted. After the reboot, it showed me a console
login. I tried startx, but it failed with this
message:
connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to
Xserver
no such process (errno 3): server error
In a man page I saw something about base-config and I
tried running it. After that, every attempt to startx
resulted in a system halt. The only thing I saw in the
X logs was something about dri not finding any cards,
even though it had already loaded the ati drivers. I
tried both dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and
fglrxconfig, but nothing chaged. Can somebody please help?
