All seems well for now

Ok, I reinstalled RC-1.  Then instead of using apt-get I used adept to 
fecth updates and do a full upgrade.

It still gives me the error when I plug-in the USB device BUT when I 
click ok it detects the device and I can access data.  Ipod is detected 
although I have not had time to mount it


One possible explanation:  previously I had uncommented out the lines in 
sources.list so I could access packages in the ubuntu universe.
