Ah Sorry - It seems he has installed Ubuntu rather than Kubuntu. 
Kubuntu has a seperate install disc that just installs KDE rather than 
Gnome.  He will have to re-install using the Kubuntu CD rather than the 
Ubuntu CD if he wants KDE.
