Were your friend to install Kubuntu from a cd, he would have ONLY KDE as
a desktop. Kubuntu CD comes without Gnome.
He must have installed Ubuntu, which comes only with Gnome Desktop, and
in that case he does not have KDE desktop.
When he has both desktops (he can run a command in the Konsole
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
to get a working KDE desktop), he will be able to choose between the
environments at system startup. Both KDM (KDE desktop manager) and GDM
(default Gnome Desktop Manager) give you an ability to choose environments.
