Printers keep vanishing with default cupsd.conf

Hi there,
I have a machine running kubuntu breezy with a local USB printer on
which I want to run several queues (for different resolutions and
qualities).
If I leave the default printcap setting of /var/run/cups/printcap, I can
set up the queues with the KDE system settings tools, although there is
an error on adding them (whether in normal or adminstrator mode -- since
I'm a member of lpadmin I guess it's not surprising that the results are
the same) and the queues appear intially stopped an not queueing. But
whenever I restart the daemon, all the queues vanish.
However by editing cupsd.conf to use /etc/printcap then things look to
be OK (so far anyway).
Does anyone else have this problem? And do you think it's a KDE "system
settings" or a cups problem?
TIA
James
