I prefer using mplayer for movies and dvd's despite lack of menu support. So,
you should have universe and multiverse sections in
your /etc/apt/sources.list. This is from my sources.list:

--- cut ---
deb http://pl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy universe
deb-src http://pl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy universe
deb http://pl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-updates universe
deb-src http://pl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-updates universe
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-security universe
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-security universe

deb http://pl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy multiverse
deb-src http://pl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy multiverse
deb http://pl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-updates multiverse
deb-src http://pl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-updates multiverse
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-security multiverse
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-security multiverse
--- cut ---

Then sudo `apt-get install mplayer-k6` (if you have AMD cpu) and
`sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/examples/install-css.sh` (to install
libdvdcss).

Then play dvd with `mplayer -vo xv -ao arts -fs dvd://`.

There are other players, eg. Kaffeine. But it doesn't work for me, some
problems with sound output. It crashes all the time.
