Digital Camera, Memory Stick and Kubuntu

My digital camera (Ricoh Capilo) and my USB memory stick are each seen as a
SCSI drive in linux. In my portable and on this iMac I just plug them in and
immediately a new hard drive is visible. It is usually sda1.

Now with Kubuntu this doesn't appear to occur. The machine hums away ... and
an error message appears about no media/sda1! Kubuntu has no devices sda1
or etc. ... so I continue to get this error message. I've added the
necessary extra line to /etc/fstab ... but still my problems persist. Has
anyone mastered this difficulty?

I suspect that MAYBE the kernel is compiled w/o SCSI support>>
