kaddressbook problem: contacts disappearing

Does anyone else encounter this problem with kaddressbook:

Once I edit a contact in the kaddressbook checking more than one category for 
it, the contact disappears from the active view. When I open the addressbook 
file, I see the contact, but I don't see it in kaddressbook any longer.

Then I add the contact again and try to assign more than one category, and it 
disappears again. 

Another instance, when contacts disappear, is if I want to edit more than one 
contact at a time. In that case one of the two contacts disappear.

In the file 
/home/ziogelis77/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf
I see all the instances of the contact added.... with or without the multiple 
categories, though. Also kmail refuses to add this contact anew saying it 
already exists in the addressbook.

Any ideas? I am using Kontact 1.1 with KDE 3.4.0 on a Debian (Kubuntu Hoary 
5.4) machine.
