Hi Daniel,
You likely do not have the needed codecs and libraries to play MP3 or
DVD; they are not installed by default as there are copyright issues
involved.
Go here: http://www.ubuntuguide.org/ and check out the sections relating
to 'multimedia codecs' and 'DVD playback capabilities'. Have fun!
