Sound question

I recently installed the latest Kubuntu, with kernel
2.6.10-5-amd64, KDE 3.4.0.  I'm able to play system
sounds, play .WAV files via amaroK 1.2.3, but any
attempt to play an MP3 file or DVD causes the
application to crash without getting any audio.  The
error message is "The application Soundserver (artsd)
crashed and caused the signal 11".  I'm not sure what
to try next.  Any suggestions?
