Ben is right I believe in that none of the main KDE packages should be depending on any kubuntu meta-packages, because people (like-me) should be allowed to have a subset of KDE installed without needing to install everything that kubuntu requires, or for that matter even everything that the kde meta package installs. As the name suggests it's a not a physical duplicate, but rather a "link" that points to something else. In most circumstances, a symlink behaves just like the target it points to (there are exceptions - see below). So if I have a file /foo/bar/myfile.txt and want to refer to that file in my home directory without having to use the full path, I create a symlink in my home directory that points to it (logically): /home/myhome/myfile.txt -> /foo/bar/myfile.txt Now if I edit /home/myhome/myfile.txt I am *actually* changing the file /foo/bar/myfile.txt. Some goes for programs, if I create a link to a program, then execute the link, I'm actually executing the target. You can link practically anything; files, executables, directories, even device nodes. Now to actually link something, you need to use the command "ln" (short for "link"). There are two types of links: hard and symbolic (symbolic are sometimes called "soft" links too). Don't get too concerned about hard links for the time being - you'd rarely need to use one and when you do, you'll KNOW that you do. Start by just using symbolic links. So, in my example above, I wanted to link /home/myhome/myfile.txt to /foo/bar/myfile.txt. Here's how you would do it: ln -s /foo/bar/myfile.txt /home/myhome/myfile.txt ...if I was in my home directory to start with, I could simply do: ln -s /foo/bar/myfile.txt The "-s" means "symbolic link" as ln by default tries to make hard links. The general form is very similar to the "cp" command: ln -s target link-name So in my example, "/foo/bar/myfile.txt" is the target, and "/home/myhome/myfile.txt" is the link name. Here's a few tips: 1. the link name can be totally different to the target name, eg; ln -s program-name myprogram This basically says "I want to refer to program-name as myprogram as well" 2. link targets can be relative to the link name, eg; cd ~ (ie, cd to /home/myuserid/) ln -s ../../etc/profile .profile This will link the system-wide shell config to your home directory. BUT unless you can edit /etc/profile you'll be stuck with whatever your sysadmin has deemed "default". 3. Deleting a symbolic link only deletes the link, not the target. 4. Symbolic links inherit the permissions of the target - don't be fooled when you see the permissions of a link being world-read+write+exec. ;) 5. Pay careful attention to file commands (cp, mv, tar, etc) because the way symbolic links are handled is sometimes a little non-intuitive. This is what I was referring to when I said links don't always behave like a regular file. "man cp", "man mv", "man tar" etc, are your friends. Well, that's a crash course in file system links. For all the details: "man ln" Cheers, James -- Woke up this mornin' an' I had myself a beer, Yeah, Ah woke up this mornin' an' I had myself a beer The future's uncertain and the end is always near. -- Jim Morrison, "Roadhouse Blues" -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I have used several flavors of Debian over the past couple years but I'm not what you would call a power user. I'm having problems installing some programs. I'm getting an error out of Synaptic that I don't know what to do with. So far it has happened when I tried to install Digikam and OpenOffice 2 first I get a dialog box that says: Some of the packages could not be retrieved from the server(s). Do you want to continue, ignoring these packages? I'm assuming that answer should be no, which then stops the process. However, for one of them I said yes just to see what would happen and I got an error like this: W: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/i/imlib2/libimlib2_1.1.2-2.1_i386.deb MD5Sum mismatch This probably was caused because of the first problem but I'm not sure. My question is, are some dependent libraries missing from the repository or am I missing some repositories from my installation of Synaptic? If so, which ones? Thanks. Not sure about the konqueror problem, but if you want to configure KDE to use konqueror also for links from kmail (and basically all other programs), open kcontrol, choose "KDE Components" -> "Component Chooser" -> Webbrowser and fill in "firefox". As to konqueror, does the flash plugin get listed in kcontrol -> "Internet and Network" -> "Web Browser" -> "Plugins" -> "Plugins"? If not, does the search path point to the right location? That turned up the following (2nd hit when I tried): http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-kde/2002-Apr/0034.html It's not for Kubuntu but it's enough to employ some lateral thinking to come up with a solution for Kubuntu: 1. Create the ~/Desktop/Trash *directory* 2. Dump the attached ".directory" file in the directory in #1. 3. Refresh the desktop (Right-click the desktop, select refresh) - voila! It's wrong. Adding a "+Kubuntu" to the google search works wonders (ie, I wonder why I didn't do that first!) http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=241280#post241280 Basically, copy /usr/share/apps/systemview/trash.desktop to ~/Desktop That's it. There are a few other ".desktop" files in /usr/share/apps/systemview that you may find useful, so have a play around, and sorry about the red herrings. I say try it out and see what you think. The KDE environment gives me all sorts of things that Gnome doesn't (Konqueror and Quanta+ sprinimmediately to mind). I know that I could run these things on the Gnome desktop, but in the end I just get on better with KDE. It's a personal thing. I also run a few things that would be considered to be Gnome, such as Gimp, and some that are simply agnostic about where they fit in. I find KDE to be far better integrated than Gnome, with all sorts of apps happily co-operating, and a properly working clipboard. You'll probably get along fine in Gnome, never having tried KDE. If KDE disappeared overnight (yes, I know why this wouldn't happen), I'm sure I'd get along alright in Gnome. However, give me a choice right now and, though I have a little peek at Gnome every now and then, I'd choose KDE every time! This is the chief reason I run KDE, as well as the fact that it's more aesthetically pleasing to my eye, at least. There's nothing that can't be done in either environment and as far as I know, almost every application will run in either environment. It's a completely subjective choice: which environment will make you happier and more productive. == Ben From martin at sourceguru.net Sat Jul 9 18:52:13 2005 From: martin at sourceguru.net (Martin Meredith) Date: Sat, 09 Jul 2005 19:52:13 +0100 Subject: DEBIAN SID In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Yes, from the Debian Sid DVDs, you can install Debian Sid, but you cannot install ubuntu berkah wrote: > Is it possible to install software from "DEBIAN-SID" DVDs? > > > -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.5 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFC0BzdUNcmPOEdeBMRAlUKAKCp/Tah43TiqwuusPbGe2oASddcMgCgnAQ/ Ev5s+Ursd5c61G/vX1FgngE= =6img -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- From james at grayonline.id.au Sat Jul 9 23:20:41 2005 From: james at grayonline.id.au (James Gray) Date: Sun, 10 Jul 2005 09:20:41 +1000 Subject: Unbuntu In-Reply-To: <200507090953.17967.wheelscribe@gmail.com> References: <20050708123839.49046.qmail@web25304.mail.ukl.yahoo.com> <200507090953.17967.wheelscribe@gmail.com> Message-ID: <200507100920.47043.james@grayonline.id.au> On Sun, 10 Jul 2005 12:53 am, Ben Miller wrote: > On Friday 08 July 2005 7:38 am, Andrew Wigglesworth wrote: > > I find KDE to be far better integrated than Gnome, > > with all sorts of apps happily co-operating, and a > > properly working clipboard. > > This is the chief reason I run KDE, as well as the fact that it's more > aesthetically pleasing to my eye, at least. However the two go hand-in-hand usually; you're most productive where you're most comfortable. It was this combination of aesthetics and productivity that I used for my boss to justify a few slightly more expensive options on the work-supplied lappy, so it would happily run Linux. I'm a Unix/Linux administrator and it makes no sense whatsoever for me to be running a non-*nix OS on my work-tools (lappy). For the odd occasions I need to access a Windows machine, there's KDE's "SMB://" kio_slave and krdc, plus Conqueror supports NTLM authentication so the proxies and our webmail system are happy. CUPS talks directly to the printers on TCP/9100 and the rest of my job is usual suspects of *nix tools. Apart from that, the Baghira theme is just plain sexy IMHO - I really wanted a PowerBook, but I'll settle for the HP6230 I've ordered. Aesthetics and productivity indeed :) James -- Klingon function calls do not have 'parameters' -- they have 'arguments' -- and they ALWAYS WIN THEM. Outlook address books can be exported to a CSV or Tab-delimited file. Both can be imported to most mail clients under Linux. Outlook mail is always a problem unless you have access to an IMAP server. If you have an IMAP server available, upload all local mail+folders to the IMAP machine, then import again to a Linux mail client. MS-Exchange has the ability to accept connections via IMAP, but the protocol needs to be enabled - check with your administrator. IE can export its bookmarks to HTML (or it used to able to, 3 years ago when I used it). If more recent versions don't export bookmarks, simply install Firefox on Windows, and let it import your IE bookmarks etc. Once in Firefox, they are *exactly* the same format as Firefox-on-Linux and can be copied straight over (via pen-drive, floppy, carrier-pigeon; anything). Secondly, most other browsers under Linux can import Firefox/Mozilla bookmarks, (Konqueror, Opera, etc). Firefox bookmarks are just a HTML file. The fly in the ointment will be the e-mail transfer from Outlook. If you're already using an exchange server, just connect your Linux IMAP client to the Exchange server and go - all your mail should be there. I believe there was a project at one time to read Outlook's "PST" files (local machine mail storage under Outlook), but I never followed it up. YMMV. Good luck. If the email is tied to an exchange server, then Evolution and Kontact can connect to them.  However, the minimum specification of this needs to be MS Exchange Server 2000 and above.  If you are using Evolution, then simply download the evolution-exchange plugin and away you go.  This opens an extra configuration set for connecting up to Exchange servers.  In regards to Kontact connectivity, this works straight out the box (figure of speak) but there are limitations.  Please refer to their website (http://www.kontact.org) as I cannot remember the limitations off hand. A product you may want to look at is MoveOver (http://www.resolvo.com) that will convert your MS stuff over to Linux.  There is an Open Source project going on for the MoveOver product but as of yet, nothing has come from it (no downloads, no nothing). Should you wish to reinstall it in the future, it has been quite trivial. I have no experience with XP but believe the same operation works. I have used Gag as one respondent mentioned using it on a floppy and on the hard disk. I have a lock file in ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail and don't recall ever setting 'locking' to none; wherever one does that. I am no expert in this sort of thing but my lock file has a pid of 1 when I quit Kontact and then when kontact restarts it gets a new pid number. kabc has a lock directory created when kontact starts but has no files in the directory. kontact and other modules do not seem to have lock files. I vaguely recall having 'lock file' errors in the past but am unable to recall what caused them or fixed them. So I am absolutely no help but I don't think the first two replies are the answer but either may work of course. If you don't need the graphical interface a Pentium- CPU and 32-64 MB RAM should be possible. If you need the graphical interface you should have a Pentium II and about 128 MB RAM, but I would recommend a Pentium III and about 256 MB RAM or more. With more than 2 GHz and 512 MB RAM you would have a very fast system for (K)ubuntu :-). Slower systems are possible, too, but I don't think that that would be fun to work with these Systems. -- Bastian Holst bastianholst at gmx.de Bitte senden Sie mir keine Word- oder PowerPoint-Anhänge. I accepted and rejected the cookies (my settings are to prompt on all cookies, so I loaded the page twice, and in between purged the cookie cache) and it loaded fine both times. I know this doesn't help you much, but maybe you're sending some weirdo browser ID to the server that's causing bad HTML to be sent back? I had similar problem to you (Konqy crashing) on an MS site sending an IE6 browser ID, changed the ID to Firefox and voila! (It would kick me out with a Konqueror ID...bah!). If you only want to have version 0.7.4 on one machine you don't need to create a deb package. Get the source package, probably from kde-apps.org, unpack them and follow the instructions in INSTALL. Might seem a dumb question but does the cd player (Kscd?) actually access your cdrom? I ask because on my installation /dev/cdrom & cdrw both point to my cdrw, but cdrom1 points to the cd player and I had to set all software accordingly. Ubuntu package for NVU (not the 1.0 release itself, but 1.0 preview release) is in hoary-backports universe. You have to add the backports repositories to install it. I, for example, have these repositories: deb http://ubuntu-backports.mirrormax.net/ hoary-backports main universe multiverse restricted deb http://ubuntu-backports.mirrormax.net/ hoary-extras main universe multiverse restricted in my /etc/apt/sources.list and it did work for me. When I use Konqueror as a web browser, it only launches the application maybe 25% of the time. Seems like the packages are pretty broken. digikamplugins is obsolete, and has an old version, the rest I don't know. However, using Debian unstables packages did help: 1) I removed digikamplugins # apt-get remove digikamplugins 2) I added the following lines to my /etc/apt/sources.list # Debian unstable deb http://ftp.debian.nl/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib (And did apt-get update afterwards) 3) I installed digikam and plugins: apt-get install digikamimageplugins digikam kipi-plugins 4) Removed the Debian unstable line from /etc/apt/sources.list again Now digikam works as expected. This was one of my biggest gripes about Kubuntu - I haven't seen it recently. If it didn't show up, it's because the .desktop file _specifically_ says it's not to be shown. So if you have package "x", look for /usr/share/applications/kde/x.desktop, or something similar, and comment out the line: NoDisplay=true And then file a bug report :-) -- derek From news at pointerstop.ca Mon Jul 25 16:37:01 2005 From: news at pointerstop.ca (Derek Broughton) Date: Mon, 25 Jul 2005 13:37:01 -0300 Subject: Many questions - part 2 References: <42E4EE1D.5030302@npc-usa.com> Message-ID: Curtis Vaughan wrote: > Ok, Now there is in the bottom right of the KDE toolbar a clock. How remarkable. I shouldn't open my mouth (at least figuratively) without checking my facts. My experience with KDE apps has always been that attempting to run them under sudo results in something like "unable to connect to display 0:0", unless you do something with xhost, whereas kdesu handles it. A quick attempt to "sudo kate" resulted in "ERROR: Communication problem with kate, it probably crashed" but not the "unable to connect" message, otoh, "sudo kcontrol" seems to work fine. Still, I'd recommend "kdesu" for starting up X apps as root, rather than sudo, just because it _always_ works. -- derek From ian at eugeneweb.com Tue Jul 26 05:14:18 2005 From: ian at eugeneweb.com (Ian Baber) Date: Mon, 25 Jul 2005 22:14:18 -0700 Subject: sound blaster live dosn't show up? Try: sudo modprobe -v emu10k1 If you don't get errors try: sudo cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp (you should hear "white noise" from your speakers) CTRL-C to stop. If that's successful add "emu10k1" to /etc/modules and it will load every time you boot :) Whatever sound system you use should now be happy (arts, esp, oss etc). Question. Once things get stabilized or fixed will that mean things will get automatically fixed in my installation of Kubuntu after doing an apt-get update/upgrade? But my real questions for now are this. Every time I reboot I have to go through a series of procedures to get the sound card to work and the wireless network up. To get the sound card to work I just have to type on a command line: modprobe opl3sa2 How do I make that permanent? In order to get the network up, the KDE wireless parameters in the Control Console don't seem to help. But by going to a command line and entering such information like: iwconfig eth0 essid xxxx iwconfig wifi0 key restricted xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx then ifconfig eth0 down, up, it will connect. Surely the Control Console config or by some other means I can make this more permanent. OH, one final thing. Whereas this is a laptop I have emplemented a suspend mode. But sometimes - not always - when waking the computer up from suspend it's like certain keys are being held down. And there's no apparent way to stop it, except by holding the on/off switch long enough (but not too long) to single a shutdown command to the computer. That's a more complicated problem, there is more than one suspend mode: suspend-to-ram (S3), suspend-to-disk (S4). For S4, you have the in-kernel swsusp and an additional patch (suspend2). To get a vague idea, www.suspend2.net is a good read. S3 can be pretty fragile, depending on your hardware, but S4 should be able to be stable, albeit with a little manual work. Talked about that on some time, but it seems the behaviour as it is (absolutely everything opens in a new tab) is intended and won't change.
