Video Driver Update

I am completely new to Linux and have installed an NVIDIA 6600 GT card in my
system (AMD 64 w/Asus A8V-E Deluxe with on-board wifi). Among other
problems, my network stuff was not detected when I installed Kubuntu so I
can't do an online update. I downloaded the NVIDIA Video Driver Update
Package to try and fix the video issues (not using hardware acceleration or
Open GL). When I tried to execute the update, I received a message about it
not being able to find a precompiled kernel interface. Then, it said that
it would attempt to execute a compile but couldn't find "cc" which appears
to be part of gcc. Can anyone tell me what to do about getting this video
driver installed? If anyone has some ideas on the Marvell network stuff, I
would be all ears as well. Thx.
