Some of the changes you speak of (default desktop settings) are
configured through config files that you can find if you hunt through
your home directory's hidden folders.

Comparing the default file that ships with Kubuntu to the file that
has the settings you prefer would not require any development skills
and should be fairly intuitive to read and study.

In addition to this, providing screenshots of your proposals should be
easy to do as well.  (I would suggest upload and linking -- rather
than attaching -- due to imposed mailing list attachment limits).
