Help needed with Karmic laptop lid troubleshooting

I have a Dell Latitude D430 which this week developed a pretty debilitating
problem in Karmic. If I close the lid, the lid open even doesn't get
recognized and so the screen never comes back on. I need some help narrowing
down which package I should focus on to look for the problem.

Details:

The problem was introduced into the archive between 9 Oct and 14 Oct (I didn't
update the laptop between those two times).

Pitti has the same laptop and it's working fine in Gnome.

We verified that the lid open event is being sent by the kernel using input-
events from input-utils.

If I close the lid and open it, it stays off. If I suspend, it unsuspends and
enables the display fine.

I already tried N-1 Intel video drivers, kernel, and kdebase-workspace
(powerdevel).

Suggestions please? Not being able to close the laptop lid is really
unpleasant.

Thanks,

Scott K
