Problems compiling KDE Style

Having a problem compiling a KDE style.

Configure brings up this error:

checking for libXext... no
configure: error: We need a working libXext to proceed. Since configure
can't find it itself, we stop here assuming that make wouldn't find
them either.

Synaptic says libxext and libxext-dev is installed.  What do I need to 
do to get it working?
