** Description changed:

  I installed the full "kubuntu-desktop" meta-package. Using "Pop_OS!"
spin of Ubuntu 17.10. SDDM is the XDM that is being used. When I enter
my password and click, "Login", the cursor changes to an "X" and you
can't click on anything else or change anything in SDDM screen. It just
sits there for 30 to 60 seconds without any sort of feedback or anything
seeming to happen. Then, it rapidly displays the desktop. It seems like
perhaps it is supposed to be showing a "Splash/Loading" screen during
that time, but, I'm not sure if that is what it is supposed to do or
  not.
+
+ CORRECTION #1: I misspoke above. It does display a splash screen after
+ the 30 to 60 second wait on the SDDM login screen. The splash shows and
+ animation for about 5 to 10 seconds before the desktop appears. The 30
+ to 60 delay is after I click "Login" on the SDDM screen *before* the
+ splash screen appears. While it is waiting on the SDDM screen after
+ clicking login, the cursor changes to an "X" and you can't click on
+ anything or change anything. The cursor can be moved though.
